A lot of people have asked me recently which mattress I recommend and I actually didn’t have an answer. So, I searched some of the private chiropractic groups that I’m in to see what my colleagues said, searched through hundreds of answers on the topic, and there were several brands that came out clearly on top. I have no affiliation with any of these companies at all, I just wanted to provide a good answer for my patients looking for a new mattress. In no particular order, here are the top five mattresses that are the most popular among chiropractors.
A large number of chiropractors really love their Purple mattress, although, one tip that was mentioned more often than once was using it with stretchy sheets. Many pointed out that hybrid mattresses like Purple’s higher-end models, combining coils and memory foam, were well worth the higher price tag.
Nectar mattresses were among the best comparable to Purple, but with a lower price range. They offer a “Forever Warranty” as well as a full year trial period.
Tuft & Needle were very much loved and also one of the more budget friendly. They also offer a foam and coil hybrid model.
Sleep Number was a very popular recommendation, but also one of the most criticized. Some pointed out that you had to go high-end for a really good one. It was also recommended to wait for their holiday sales because they are among the more expensive options.
Tempur-Pedic was also a strong recommendation, with a higher price tag similar to Sleep Number, and also offers a hybrid option.
Special mentions go to Bioposture, Serta iComfort, Helix, Ghost Bed, My Green Mattress, and Casper, which were all also frequently recommended by chiropractors.
Note for the chemically sensitive: My Green Mattress was the only one that was chemical-free and organic, but BioPosture will also special order mattresses without flame retardants if you provide a doctor’s note.
Many chiropractors tell patients to go with the best mattress they can afford and to get something with a trial period, which all of the top listed above offer. You want to get the best mattress you can because you spend a large percentage of your lifetime sleeping, and quality sleep nourishes every aspect of your health and well-being. That being said, the most cost-effective ones highly recommended seem to be Nectar and Tuft & Needle.
Chiropractic Tips on Healthy Sleep Position:
- Your mattress should provide head to toe support. If there are gaps between your body and your mattress, you won’t get proper support.
- Side-sleeping is optimal for your spine, and back-sleeping is good too, but if you have lower back or hip pain, you may benefit from a pillow between your knees when side-sleeping, or underneath your knees when on your back. A mattress is usually better on the firmer side for back-sleepers and softer for side-sleepers. Sleeping on your stomach is not recommended.
- Choose a pillow that allows your head and neck to remain level with your mid and lower spine. Or when lying on your back, one that keeps your head and neck level with your upper back and spine. Don’t choose a thick pillow that props up your head and neck.
